A Third Mass Setting
I did not intend to write a third mass—at least not yet! But upon finishing the Kyrie from Missa Dramatica, another Kyrie just poured out of me. Thus, Missa Cantus was born. The name reflects both the shorter, song-like structure employed in each movement as well as the more overt use of chant-like passages. There is also a bit of Minimalist influence, probably due to listening to a lot of Arvo Pärt at the time.
As of the end of 2020, I have the Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei completed, with the intention of adding the Gloria and Credo. My intent for the Credo is that it will be overtly chant rather than song, and more functional in nature—its performance in concert would be optional. I am actively seeking a choir to collaborate with on completing setting—please contact me if you are interested in directly supporting this effort!
The Music
I am working on making demo recordings of the finished movements. In the meantime, here are “digital demos” along with the music for your perusal.
