Program Notes

Isle of Avalon is the final movement from the King Arthur Suite, though it can also be performed as a stand-alone tone poem (Tone Poem No. 5). This movement tells the story of the mysterious Isle of Avalon from the King Arthur legends.

This piece was inspired by Northwest Chamber Orchestra’s performance of Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten—my very first exposure to Pärt, and a stunning performance, too!
